Foxygen – San Francisco

foxygen

Foxygen are a fresh new band who impressively create retro sounding music that brings to mind 60’s and 70’s folk and rock music. San Francisco is a charming song. Its music and Sam France’s playful lyrics remind me of artists like Belle & Sebastian, Bob Dylan, and The Velvet Underground. The chorus on here is lovely. “I left my love in San Francisco,” sings Sam. Then the female vocalist replies comically, “That’s okay I was bored anyway”. Foxygen’s music is sure to bring a smile to your face.

Grizzly Bear – Shields (Mini Review)

I’ve come to realize that Grizzly Bear’s music takes some time to settle in and reveal itself. This is because their music is so intricate and well thought out. Their new record Shields is one of the best records I’ve heard this year. It sounds great and I think it’s their most cohesive album to date. Shields doesn’t have exactly the same accessible pop sound that some of Veckatimest had but I think anyone can find themselves singing along to these songs after giving the album some time. I guess I would describe Grizzly Bear as a folk rock band but they truly have a sound that is all their own. Grizzly Bear’s arrangements are so unique and creative. Every listen yields new sounds and textures to appreciate. I love the jazz/blues ending on “What’s Wrong”, the sighed and whispered vocals on “Gun-Shy”, and the heavy shift of tone near the end of “A Simple Answer”. This is a record to get lost and carried away in. Shields shows that Grizzly Bear have a bright and long future ahead of them; although you might have come to that conclusion already.

Shields comes out Sept. 18. Listen to it in it’s entirety here.

Band of Horses – Knock Knock

I’m happy to announce that Band of Horses have a new record called Mirage Rock coming out September 18. This year just keeps getting better and better with the amount of great bands releasing new records. The first single “Knock Knock” is definetly a fun rocker that is a sign of good things to come.

Dirty Projectors – Dance For You

I’m loving this new Dirty Projector’s song. It has a Beach Boys vibe, is very charming, and might be there most chill song to date. The instrumentation is simple for most of the song with hand clapping and guitar. There is also a string section in the middle of the song that keep things interesting and weird which Dirty Projectors are so good at with their music. This song is about searching in life and not forgetting to dance along the way.

Dirty Projector’s new album Swing Lo Magellan comes out July 9.

Fiona Apple – Anything We Want

Fiona Apple’s song “Anything We Want” has quickly become one of my favorite songs of the year. It’s one of the best love songs I’ve heard in awhile. The lyrics are great, some highlights are: “Let’s pretend we’re eight years old playing hooky, I draw on the wall and you can play UFC rookie” and, “I kept touching my neck to guide your eye to where I wanted you to kiss me when we find some time alone”.

Listen to “Anything We Want” here.

Marissa Nadler – Apostle

Marissa Nadler is a talented singer songwriter who has a very beautiful, haunting voice. Apostle is a song that that stuck out to me from her new album The Sister. It’s a very hypnotic track. In it Nadler sings of an alcohol problem and the complicated feelings that arise with an affair. When Nadler sings the line, “I’m home” in such a drawn out way she captures my attention like no other song this year.

Listen to the Apostle here.

Grizzly Bear – Sleeping Ute

Grizzly Bear’s new single is just as original and rich with sound as the rest of the band’s music. I’m looking forward to hearing their new album which is coming out September 18.
