Albums to Check Out July 27

This is a refreshing week in music. It’s been awhile since some truly great music has come out. Some albums coming out this week will most likely be on many people’s best of the year lists. Next week will be even better with possibly my favorite album of the year Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs coming out and House of Heroes’ Suburba. I am bubbling over with excitement for those albums.

My pick of the week:

Menomena – Mines

This album pulled me into Menomena’s rabbit hole of creative music and I enjoyed the whole wonderful experience. It’s very accessible and its production is great. Mines is epic and reminds me of literature similar to Dante’s Inferno and The Odyssey. I’m not certain about why the album is called Mines but I think it could relate to how the people in each song seem to be searching, and mining for something. They seem to be searching within their souls. It’s a very honest album about admitting weakness and searching for hope. Desire seems to be a major theme of the album. The songs sing of ghosts, devils, God, beasts, sinking ships, liars, and McDonalds. You read that right. This has become one of my favorite albums of 2010. Everything is great. The music, lyrics, vocals, production. It’s solid. Go down the rabbit hole with Menemona and witness life and humanity at it’s rawest.

Best Coast – Cray For You

If you’re crazy for the band She & Him and 60’s sun drenched pop music then you will find much to love about Best Coast’s debut album Crazy For You. It’s all about love and relationships. Hey that’s a cute cat on the cover.

Jaill – That’s How We Burn

Some nice new Psychedelic Pop Rock music.

Vanish Valley – Self Titled

Similar to the band Blind Pilot and singer/ songwriter Joseph Arthur. Andrew McAllister sings of life, faith, and redemption. Great alt country folk music.

Andrew Peterson – Counting Stars

This is one of singer/ songwriter Andrew Peterson’s best releases to date. The themes on the album are promises and hope.

Scala and Kolacny – With or Without You (U2 Cover)

Scala & Kolacny Brothers is a Belgian girls’ choir, conducted by Stijn Kolacny and accompanied by Steven Kolacny on the piano. They have such a beautiful sound and their arrangements are amazing. I learned about them from their amazing cover of Radiohead’s song “Creep” that was featured on The Social Network trailer. I am digging their music. Digging it!

Steve Mason – Lost and Found

This song immediately jumped out at me. Very good beat and vocals. For fans of Jose Gonzalez.
